For cross species assays, AlleleID® identifies the conserved regions to design a universal probe. This functionality is especially useful to detect a species or a taxa when designing a diagnostic assay. This functionality is also useful to help study gene expression when genome draft of the organism under study is not available.

How Species Were Identified Historically
The field of disease diagnosis and drug development has seen a rapid replacement of culture based methods for bacterial and species identification by faster and more reliable molecular based techniques such as real time PCR and microarrays. The reason for the success for these techniques is the ease with which one can identify a species from a sample collected from complex sources such as air, soil, or water.

Real Time PCR procedure
In a real time PCR protocol, a fluorescent reporter molecule is used to monitor the PCR as it progresses. The fluorescence emitted by the reporter molecule manifolds as the PCR product accumulates with each cycle of amplification. Based on the molecule used for the detection, the real time PCR techniques can be categorically placed under two heads:
