ND鏡，又叫中灰密度鏡，其作用是過濾光線。這種濾光作用是非選擇性的，也就是說，ND鏡對各種不同波長的光線的減少能力是同等的、均勻的，只起到減弱光線的作用，而對原物體的顏色不會產生任何影響，因此可以真實再現景物的反差。
    使用ND鏡主要的目的是防止過曝，如果光線太亮就很難選擇較慢的快門速度拍攝，這時使用ND鏡減少進入鏡頭的光線，就能夠使用較慢的快門拍攝了。例如，如果需要在陽光強烈的室外拍攝，又或者需要在正常光線條件下用較長的曝光時間，以慢速快門拍攝瀑布以表現出虛化的水流等特殊效果，都需要ND鏡。
