火山巖是熔融的巖漿隨火山噴發冷凝而成的密集氣孔的玻璃質熔巖，其氣孔體積占巖石體積的50％以上。因孔隙多、質量輕、容重小于1克／立方厘米，能浮于水面而得名。它的特點是質量輕、強度高、保溫、隔熱、吸音、防火、耐酸堿、耐腐蝕，且無污染、無放射性等，是理想的天然綠色、環保節能的建材原料。本區的浮石礦質量較好，顏色多為灰黑色和褐紅色，礦石基本呈較均勻的氣孔狀分布，礦石結構為玻璃質結構，構造為氣孔狀構造。因其表面均勻布滿氣孔，色澤古色古香，同時具有保溫、隔熱、隔音、吸音和導電系數小、無放射性等特性，應用范圍如下：
