 礬土又稱礬土或鋁土礦，主要成分是氧化鋁，系含有雜質(zhì)的水合氧化鋁，是一種土狀礦物，白色或灰白色，因含鐵而呈褐黃或淺紅色。密度2.4-2.5g/cm3，硬度1～3，不透明，質(zhì)脆，較難熔化，不溶于水，能溶于硫酸、氫氧化鈉溶液，主要用于煉鋁，制耐火材料。 耐火材料行業(yè)所稱的鋁礬土通常是指煅燒后Al2O3>=48%、而含F(xiàn)e2O3較低的高鋁礬土熟料。熟料為灰白淺黃及深灰色，它主要用于高鋁質(zhì)耐火材料，也可用來制作電熔棕剛玉。高鋁礬土熟料是按AL2O3含量及Fe2O3、TiO2、CaO+MgO、K2O+Na2O等雜質(zhì)含量和熟料體積密度與吸水等項指標來分級的。

（4）硅酸鋁耐火纖維--具有重量輕，耐高溫，熱穩(wěn)定性好，導熱率低，熱容小和耐機械震動等優(yōu)點。用于鋼鐵、有色冶金、電子、石油、化工、宇航、原子能、*等多種工業(yè)。它是把高鋁熟料放進融化溫度約為2000～2200℃的高溫電弧爐中，經(jīng)高溫熔化、高壓高速空氣或蒸汽噴吹、冷卻，就成了潔白的“棉花”——硅酸鋁耐火纖維。它可壓成纖維毯、板或織成布代替冶煉、化工、玻璃等工業(yè)高溫窯爐內(nèi)襯的耐火磚。消防人員可用耐火纖維布做成衣服。
（5） 以鎂砂和礬土熟料為原料，加入適當結(jié)合劑，用于澆注盛鋼桶整體桶襯效果甚佳。
（6）制造礬土水泥，研磨材料，陶瓷工業(yè)以及化學工業(yè)可制鋁的各種化合物。
